What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art originally developed by the Gracie family, that allows a proficient fighter to defeat a bigger, stronger, opponent through the use of efficiency and leverage. Although defence from strikes are practised, the sport is a grappling art. This means we don't punch or kick each other, and the risk of injuries that comes with other Martial Arts that do are greatly diminished. Through the use of techniques you are taught in class, you will learn how to take your opponent to the ground, control them, and submit them. The hardest part of BJJ is having the courage to put yourself out of your comfort zone and show up to your first class. At Alton BJJ we are always happy to see new faces, and welcome you to our Academy.
